2nd Tonbridge Scarf

Our History: A Century of Adventure

The 2nd Tonbridge Scout Group was founded in 1924 by the Reverend Fred Cribb. In those early days, the Group was a staple of town life, famous for its marching band and regular parades through the streets of Tonbridge.

The Bishop’s Cross

Our distinctive claret and gold scarf carries the Bishop’s Cross badge. This honors our link with Tonbridge Parish Church and serves as a tribute to Russell White—our Group Chairman from 1946—who became the very first Bishop of Tonbridge in 1959.

From Army Huts to High Street Discoveries

Our first home was a WWI Army hut purchased in 1928 for £100. It sat where McDonald’s stands today on Cannon Lane—which back then was just undeveloped countryside! After WWII, the hut was moved to its current home on The Ridgeway.

Did you know? In the 1960s, our fundraising “jumble sale” in the High Street led to the discovery of a hidden medieval structure (now Blair House). The proceeds from that legendary shop eventually built the brick Headquarters we use today!

The Headquarters Today 🏰

Located on The Ridgeway, our purpose-built facility is a hub for the community, featuring:

  • Large main hall (badminton court size)
  • Dedicated meeting rooms & full kitchen
  • On-site parking & private outdoor paddock

Skills for Life ⛺

A century later, our mission is unchanged: helping young people develop confidence and resilience. Today, we provide adventure for two Beaver Colonies, a Cub Pack, and a Scout Troop.

Join the Success Story 🤝

Our history was built by volunteers, and our future depends on them too. Whether you can help behind the scenes or on the frontline of adventure, we’d love to have you.
